Matriarchs in Frame

Project type

Portraits

Date

May 2024

Location

Central Florida

The camera has always played an important role in my family. Immortalizing every wedding, family reunion, and birthday, so as to capture and celebrate life and our history. As a child, I was eager to be in front of the lens when my mother or grandmother brought out a camera. Now, as an adult, I am eager to be behind the lens and uplift the women that have shown me the beauty in myself and the life we create. "Matriarchs in Frame” illustrates the unique kinship shared by mothers and daughters. The images serve as windows into the shared experiences, traditions, and milestones that shape this accord over time. I aim to honor the diverse and beautiful facets of this union, embracing the exceptional qualities that make each relationship special.
This project was born out of a personal desire to capture the connection between my own mother and grandmother. They have always been my biggest supporters, role models, and best friends. I am reminded of a quote from the 2023 “Barbie” film that states, “We mothers stand still, so our daughters can look back to see how far they've come.” This project serves as a means to empower them, and all other mothers like them. As viewers engage with the images, my wish is for them to reflect on their own experiences, finding resonance in the universal themes of love, growth, and connection. "Matriarchs in Frame" is an ode to the strength and splendor that arises when two souls navigate the journey of life together.
